Bio-identical Hormones
Bio-identical hormones
can be produced from plants, such as Mexican wild yams and soy. Such hormones are termed “natural,” meaning they
are identical to the hormones that the human body produces. Some studies reveal that such “natural” alternatives
to hormone replacement therapy may be more desirable with fewer side effects.
Different from “natural,” bio-identical hormones,
there are also synthetic hormones which are quite different in that they do not identically resemble the hormones produced
by the human body. These synthetic hormones are also used in a variety of hormone replacement products. Some studies show
that synthetic approaches to hormone replacement therapy may not be as safe, and may cause more undesirable side effects.
Menaul Compounding pharmacists can prepare natural hormones that can be formulated
specifically for your needs.
Progesterone – A hormone produced
by the human body. Female progesterone is an important hormone in that it helps sustain pregnancy, as well as aid in regulating
menstrual cycles. An increased level of progesterone signals the preparation for a possible implantation of a fertilized egg
and thus pregnancy. If implantation does not take place, progesterone levels are reduced and the uterus discards its
thick layer in preparation for menstruation.
Testosterone – Testosterone
is a hormone produced by the human body. In females, a small amount of testosterone is produced by the ovaries. Male testosterone
is an androgenic hormone produced primarily in the testes. Testosterone aids in maintaining a healthy sex drive, mood, energy,
muscle, and even skin quality.
DHEA – DHEA is a male sex hormone
(an androgen) produced by the human body in the adrenal glands. DHEA levels peak at about the age of 20, and begin to decline
thereafter. A 70 year-old has about 89 percent less DHEA than a 20-year-old. DHEA is capable of converting into other steroid
hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The majority of DHEA supplements are manufactured in a lab. Some
refer to DHEA as an “anti-aging” hormone because of its association with a feeling of well-being and renewed energy,
among other things.
Estrone – Estrone is one of
three estrogens which increases after menopause.
Estriol – Estriol is one of
the weaker estrogens that increases during pregnancy. A synthetic from is used to treat deficiency.
Estradiol – Estradiol is the
most potent of the naturally occurring estrogens. Estradiol promotes growth and maintenance of the reproductive system.
